John the Baptist was Jesus' cousin. After John grew up, he lived in the desert. He wore clothes made of camel's hair. He ate locusts and wild honey. The Word of God came to John while he was in the desert.
From that day on, John began to teach people. He told them to stop sinning. He told them to ask God's forgiveness. He told them to be baptized. John was preparing the way for Jesus to come. He baptized many people.
John taught people many good things. He told them to share with others. He said to only collect the amount of money they deserve. He told them not to take what wasn't theirs. He also told people to be thankful for what they had.
Some people thought John might be the Christ. But John told the people, "I am not the Messiah. Someone is coming who is greater than I. I baptize with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."
One day, Jesus came to John. He asked John to baptize Him. John thought that Jesus should baptize him instead, but John obeyed Jesus and baptized Him. When Jesus came out of the water, heaven was opened. The Holy Spirit descended on Jesus like a dove. A voice came from heaven saying, " You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased."
